Opposition to the IPL

A few Cricketing bodies have taken exception to the IPL. The ECB have not allowed players to join the league as it coincides with the English County Championships and with England’s tour of New Zealand. It is understood that the ECB are considering forming their own 20-20 League to oppose the IPL and to keep English players from joining the IPL. However, many say that the money will end up talking and already Dimitri Mascarenhas has joined the IPL. The Australian and Pakistani Cricketing boards have also clashed with the BCCI, the Australians tour of the West Indies clashes with the tournament whilst Pakistani cricketers were given permission to join the ICL by the PCB.

There are fears that the IPL will be damaging to 50 over and test cricket, and the amount of money involved in it makes it very likely. With billions of dollars behind the IPL it dwarfs the amounts of money involved in other forms of cricket and therefore will surely see the demise of those games, or at least the quality of those games will begin to drop. Indeed, the IPL has already been blamed for India’s poor test performance against South Africa earlier this month. Indian tabloids are arguing that players we’re too preoccupied prior to the test promoting the IPL rather than preparing for the test match.
